Udon Thani, Thailand: Land of Many Gods

Stone Gods Which Cannot Move

The gods of Thailand are on display in this wat near Udon Thani, the mission field of Missionary Danny Jones and his wife, Rachel. The picture at the left is of a concrete image of a god resting his chin on his fists. This is but one of the many images in this display. There are images to represent most of the gods of the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Buddhism has its roots in Hinduism and claims to have supplanted it.

The one true and living God has endowed this country with many beautiful, awe inspiring places and now the people can learn to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

A Common Element in Most False Systems of Worship

Not only did the serpent capture the imagination of Adam and Eve, he has also found a place in the thinking of most of the world's religions.

The people of Israel even allowed the brazen serpent which Moses had erected in the wilderness to become an object of high esteem. But it served its purpose in the wilderness. King Hezekiah ordered it to be destroyed. (See 2 Kings 18:1- 5). The Bible calls this same serpent "the god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4) and the dragon "which deceives the whole world" (Revelation 12:9).

In this picture, the serpent takes the form of a seven-headed cobra protecting an image of one of the gods.

This is a backdrop for the work of Missionary Danny Jones and his family.

Missionary Danny Jones, Rachel and Tara

Danny and Rachel have been on the field in Udon Thani for just over two years. During that time God has blessed them with a beautiful daughter, Tara, and with a growing work among the very superstitious Thai people.

While they have been able to purchase property and erect a building dedicated to the worship of the one true and living God, Danny and Rachel have taught English in the schools. This gives them an open door to present the message of salvation to the children as well as the faculty and many parents.

Rita and I were greatly blessed by our visit in a Wednesday Bible study with Danny and the members of the church. In training children they are using lessons they have written. He is also using the Bible doctrine book written by Raymond McCallister and translated and printed by International Christian Publishers.

I have asked Danny to provide the name of a Thai person living in the USA to help with translating additional materials for use in missions and churches ministering in the Thai language.

House of Worship of the True and Living God

This structure, located on about one acre of land near a large new housing development for middle-income Thai people is adequate for about one hundred people to worship. The building in front will be razed because of extensive termite damage. The building in back is being used for worship and for housing for the missionaries.

Church in Udon Thani

This is a Sunday morning congregation. God has certainly blessed Missionaries Danny and Rachel Jones and the work in this city of about eighty-five thousand people in northeastern Thailand. For hundreds of years these people have known only Buddhism, but because of the Jones's and other missionaries who are preaching the message of Christ in Thailand there is an open door to them.

Please pray for Danny, Rachel and Tara and the work in Udon Thani. You may contact him by e-mail at hmmdth@cs.com.

Love,

Bill & Rita Johnson, International Christian Publishers, a ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, Hamburg, Arkansas, USA
