New Translation Ministry Started in Nairobi, Kenya

Upon o arrival in the airport at Nairobi, Kenya Rita and I were met by Missionary Ernie Hopper. Brother Hopper and his wife Cissy along with their daughter two sons have been on the field in Kenya for about nineteen years. As a result of his work there are now sixty churches in and around Nairobi. Brother Hopper works with the pastors and churches, encouraging them an helping the develop evangelistic ministires. He works with the Bible institute training those whom the Lord has called into the pastoral ministry.

Rita and I were a bit apprehensive upon our arrival for our first visit to the African Nation of Kenya. But we were excited about the opportunity to provide Bible centered literature for those who speak the Swahili language in Eastern Africa. The Kenya Airlines flight from London was comfortable; flight attendants were very helpful and we slept through most of the night arriving about daybreak. The airport was a little less than up-to-date and it took too long to work our way through the slow-moving line to obtain a visa. Cost of the visa was fifty US Dollars each. Already exhausted by the long trip from USA, we learned right away that roads in Kenya are not exactly the best in the world. So we were glad to find rest and comfort in the Hopper home. We were welcomed into the Hopper home by four friendly African dogs and Cissy, along with her out-of-place, protective Mexican Chihuahua, Paco. We enjoyed every minute of our fellowship with the Hopper family. Their two boys, Leighton and Michael, were expecially helpful in teaching us about a special sport most Americans know very little of. The sport, Rugby, made little sense to us, but those boys declared that it was far more exciting than any American football game. Watching their high school team play the faculty, I was convinced they are right. It is an exciting, rough and tumble sport.

Missionary Hopper had already taken the Apple iMac computer to Kenya. The computer was one of many given to the ICP ministry by the Bassett Road Baptist Chruch in Palestine, Texas. Brother Hopper took the computer to an Apple repair store in Nairobi where it was upgraded, making it fully functinal for the purpose of translating Bible study books.

Our first day there, I was introduced to Moses Wanjala who had volunteered to translate the mateirals. Moses had computer savvy, but had not been introduced to the programs needed for the work. I spent most of my time helping Moses learn the programs and procedures to translate the materials.
